How to Create Your Life in a World That Feels Broken

Let’s be honest: none of us can control the headlines. We can’t instantly fix politics, corporate corruption, or decades of environmental damage. That’s terrifying. And when you let it, that sense of helplessness can creep into your everyday life, influencing how you show up, how you relate to others, even how you see yourself. Yet this is exactly where creating your life intentionally starts to matter.

Everywhere you turn, systems we thought were reliable are breaking down. Revelations, scandals, environmental collapse, a sense that the structures holding society together are fraying — it’s overwhelming. It’s easy to feel small, powerless, and anxious.

But there’s one area where we do have control: our minds. How we respond, how we choose to act, and how we engage with the world around us — that is ours. This is the essence of intentional living.

I’ve been thinking a lot about perspective lately. There’s always two ways to interpret the chaos: one is total breakdown — everything we knew is gone, nothing is safe, nothing works. The other is to see it as a failure of the old systems — systems in which many of us were suffering, that didn’t prioritize our wellbeing, or the wellbeing of the planet. Systems that, frankly, caused some of the mental health crises, environmental destruction, and societal inequities we see today.

Framing it this way doesn’t make the problems disappear, but it changes how you carry them. Recognizing that the world isn’t just “bad,” it’s a reflection of broken structures that need rethinking, allows you to stop internalizing it as personal doom. It also reminds you that the world we want — a more functional, more compassionate, more intentional world — starts with how we choose to show up. This is where future self planning becomes a practical tool for clarity.

We can’t stop the news from being horrifying, but we can decide how much of it we let into our thinking. We can take in information, process it, and act in ways that preserve our focus and clarity. We can show up with thoughtfulness rather than fear. That’s not passive. It’s conscious engagement, a simple way to create your life with purpose.

I genuinely believe small shifts matter. Showing up intentionally in our work, relationships, and communities accumulates. It changes environments. It influences culture. It doesn’t require a manifesto, a movement, or social media grandstanding — just clarity in how we live and what we prioritize.

This isn’t about ignoring reality. It’s about choosing your frame. It’s about refusing to let fear run your life, even when fear seems justified. It’s about seeing what’s broken, acknowledging it, and deciding not to carry that weight in your thinking or actions. Instead, focus on what’s actionable, what’s constructive, and what aligns with your values. Designing the life you want starts here — with small, deliberate decisions.

We live in unprecedented times, and yes, much is fucked up. But how we respond matters more than the news itself. You can carry despair, or you can carry awareness and intention. I choose the latter — not because it erases the horrors around us, but because it allows me to show up as someone capable of influence, however small. And that, I think, is how we start to shift things, bit by bit, without losing our minds.

The world may feel like it’s collapsing, but we don’t have to collapse with it. We can observe, we can think, and we can act — and in doing so, we maintain a kind of control that is real, practical, and powerful. This is how we truly create our life, even in chaos.
