The ever changing world of models

Table of Contents

This glamorous industry has been around for decades, and millions have tried to make their mark in it. It is a world that is hard to conquer with just good looks alone; a model needs to be disciplined and hard-working too. With the ever changing industry, it is no wonder that the model requirements are constantly evolving, whether it be difference in size, age or ethnicity.

We spoke to Lynn Campbell-Walter at BMA Model agency about the rapid change in the industry, how it has evolved, how the business works, and what is expected of the models.

Has the industry changed in the last 5 years?

Very much, the industry changes rapidly, UK’s demographics is increasing and has a very diverse population. All advertisers will want to appeal to these ethnicities, so model agencies need to have a greater range of ethnicities to cover advertisers needs. Plus the wider population is increasing in size, people are much bigger now, so much of fashion is changing, increasingly plus size models are being accepted as the norm. This also applies to the age of model, the population is increasingly older, people are living longer, and people are healthier, so much of advertising is geared up to appealing to the more mature. However, generally clients select models with healthy hair, teeth, skin and nails. Premium grooming is essential, a healthy diet, regular exercise and general TLC are all essential. You will need an air of confidence and not be retiring in front of the camera so if you feel good you will look good and be extra confident.

Why is the choice of model agency so important?

A model agency can guide a model through her career. Modeling can be just the beginning of developing a lucrative but related career. Today’s models often find that the experience she or he has gained, and the contacts made, can lead to a career in acting, presenting, fashion, styling, magazine journalism, public relations, fashion house direction, fashion design and many other fields.

Do you train your models?

Professional models are 100% dedicated. BMA’s models range from babies to grandparents and from fashion models to actors. On reflection and contrary to the usual conception not all models are tall and a diminutive size. Exploring the BMA website we find all shapes and sizes fit the modeling/acting world. We represent a diverse selection of models and actors who require different skills. Catwalk models require to be trained to walk on the catwalk which requires different skills to an actor or to a makeup artist. Their specialties require a completely different approach and training so we advise anyone wishing to do this to train at speacialised schools.
