The vital statistics of working with a model agency

Table of Contents

A model agency is such a great way to get the perfect model for your shoot. If you’re working with a good agency, you’ll be able to choose from a huge selection of models, keep yourself safe, and get the exact image you want for your project. However, how do you pick the right agency? We know there are plenty of worries and troubles when it comes to using a model agency which might put you off, meaning you might take on a model with no contract. But there are so many factors you have to think about and we know it can be stressful. We’ve spoken to Josie (@passportjosie) from LENI’S MODELS to give her know-how on what you should aspect from the model agency, and what they’ll expect from you.

Do you expect your client to know exactly what they need?

Well established clients should know what works for them, in terms of how successfully certain looks will sell for their brand. This is because they have been doing it for so long and working with so many different models and they have the sales to prove who works for them. Once they’ve established a working formula, there’s no need for them to change it, unless the brand is changing too. These clients are easy to work with because we know what they need, and it is simply a case of finding a girl that slots into the look.

When working with clients who have fairly new companies or haven’t used models before, it can be trial and error. They don’t have any previous experience to base their choices on, so we need to give them as many options as possible, and work by means of deduction. Of course, it would be easier if they had some ideas about what will work for their brand, for example; hair colour, body shape or age, to narrow our search criteria down. When working with clients in this situation, the job can take a little longer, but it is worth it because we get to enjoy the more creative side of our job as bookers. Once they have discovered what works for them and we have helped them through that process, it can be the beginning of a strong work relationship between us.

What do you do to protect the client?

It is important that as the agency between the model and the client, we protect both parties as well as ourselves. We exchange contracts with the clients before each job, that protect us both in any eventuality, for example when a model falls ill or runs late on the shoot date, and vice versa. There are some things that occasionally come up that are not included in the contract, such as exclusivity rights, but these are dealt with differently depending on the clients individual needs.

What is the most exciting project you have been involved in?

The most exciting projects are the ones when we can be the most creative and, of course, make the most money! At the end of the day, this is still a business, and when we book a big job it’s great for us and even better for our model. In the office, we definitely get the most excited when the model is excited too. It’s even better if we have a good relationship with the client, because everyone can appreciate the good news together. If I had to name one particular job, I’d have to say it was when I booked a brand new face on a huge Sunsilk commercial. Her excitement when I told her she’d been confirmed was infectious.
