As a professional photographer, your images have to be perfect. Maybe you have a mental checklist of things that need to be put in place to capture your perfect image, and on that I’m sure there would be the scenery or backdrop to the picture. There are a lot of factors that are variable so it can sometimes be tricky to get it spot on. So how exactly do you ensure you get exactly what you want out of a photography studio? We’ve spoken to Phil Mowat, from The Beauty Studio in Shoreditch to get his professional advice for you.

What’s the best way to get what you want out of a studio?

Always use the most suitable studio for the look you are trying to achieve. The choice of studio can often be the last choice when organising a shoot – it’s best to get your ideal studio pencilled in first, then work the rest around it. There’s no point getting everything in place to then find the dark warehouse space you are looking for is not available on the date you want. Secondly make sure you pop in to see the space in person before the shoot – there’s nothing like seeing it in person. You can then start planning, so it all runs smoothly on the day. Thirdly, on the day arrive early and allow yourself plenty of time to set up and settled. The day will then nicely (and if you’ve allowed extra time at the end of the day, but finish early, everyone will be happy!)

How important is it to get your images right?

Simply – it’s vital! What’s the point of organising the whole thing, if you don’t end up with what you want. Don’t settle for 2nd best. It all boils down to meticulous planning and organisation.
